The Truth About Women’s Ab Workouts – Why Cardio Is Not the Answer
The Truth About Women’s Ab Workouts – Why Cardio Is Not the Answer – Time is precious commodity…and they aren’t making any more of it. You don’t want to waste time when working out your abs, especially if you are looking to get the best results possible. So for all of you out there who have been doing a gazillion crunches and sit-ups, even though this does practically nothing for your abs without a diet and mindset strategy…you need to listen hard. Doing all these reps will not take a single inch off your waist or melt any fat off your mid-section. If you truly want to transform your body and get the tight, firm abs you’ve always dreamed of then you need to make some modifications to your workout routine, diet and mindset to get jaw dropping results.
The 3 critical elements you need to burn fat:
1) Diet and nutrition
2) Strategic, high intensity workouts
3) Focus on strengthening the Core
You ever notice those people you see in the gym each day that seem to be doing the same workout? Not only are they doing the same workout day after day, but they are doing it with the same intensity…or lack of intensity. You know the one I’m talking about – that person running on the elliptical machine, treadmill or stationary bike like a rat on an exercise wheel. They stare blankly ahead at the bank of television monitors, listening to their “workout mix” on an iPhone. They are moving along at a consistent pace…no alteration…staring with hope at the “calorie’s burned” indicator…optimistic that this time they are losing weight.
The only exercise you are seeing is an “exercise” in futility. Now don’t blame them…they simply have been given erroneous information that you yourself may have received at some point. The conventional wisdom says to do cardio…get your heart beat up…get in the “fat burning zone” and the weight will just melt off your body. Did you know you have just as much chance of burning muscle as you do fat? Since muscle burns more calories than fat, you may actually be hurting your weight loss efforts doing that hour of cardio.
Now I’m not saying cardio doesn’t have its place…but don’t waste your time on an elliptical machine if you are looking to sculpt perfect abs and lose weight. As I said earlier, diet and nutrition should be your first plan of attack. Eat lots of whole foods as opposed to processed foods, fruits, vegetables and good sources of organic protein like fish, chicken and lean beef. Stay away from Trans fats, usually found in cookies, crackers, pastries, white flour products, etc…these fats are killers.
Keep your workouts strategic and high intensity. I am a big proponent of incorporating moderate weight lifting and resistance training into your ab workouts. This will let you get a full body workout and help you to build muscle and burn fat simultaneously. Lift as heavy a weight as you can and still do 6 – 10 reps with good form. There are myriad different exercises you can find to build the program that best fits your body. Mix it up every couple of weeks, replacing exercises and intensity level. This will keep your muscles from settling in with any one routine and prevent you from plateauing in your development. You will build lean muscle, burn more fat and get that sexy, toned look.
Be careful about taking advice from some of the popular magazines that target women. They often give bad fitness and nutrition advice based on the latest fad diet or celebrity endorsed program. The fundamentals never change. Don’t get drawn in by the myths promising you a silver bullet. They will promise you the perfect women ab workout plan. Nothing replaces a sound diet, consistent exercise and strengthening your core if you want to lose weight and build a tight, flat stomach.
